Seltzer Water, Sparkling Water, Or Flat? What Your Choice Says About You And Your Glass

Feeling a bit parched? Looking for something to drink to quench your thirst? Since most human beings are more than 50 to 60% water, it’s a no-brainer that water should be your go-to beverage of choice.

However, when there are tempting drinks like sodas, liquor, cocktails, and energy drinks around, it’s hard to grab a glass of the good stuff. Water.

However, if you are looking for a way to make your next glass of water more exciting, why not reach for seltzer or sparkling water over flat?

Even more, have you ever thought about the types of water you frequently consume and how it impacts your energy levels, skin, and overall health?

In this short and sweet post, I wanted to take a closer look at popular water available from retailers, ranging from water in aluminum cans, artisan glass bottles, plastic bottles, and family-size jugs by the gallons.

Water is something we all need throughout are day. Yet too often, we take this precious resource for granted and assume we will always have easy access to fresh, drinkable water.

Seltzer Water

Unlike club soda or tonic water, which typically has a host of added minerals as well as CO2 added to it, seltzer water is simply a fizzy form of water with tiny gaseous CO2 bubbles.

Instead of downing a soda, try enjoying a flavored bottle or glass of seltzer water. With popular options like cherry-flavored, citrus fruit infusion, or ginger, drinking carbonated seltzer water becomes a refreshing treat.

Do look over the nutrition label of any seltzer water you choose to watch out for added sugars, artificial sweeteners, or other potentially undesirable ingredients.

Also, there may be some health benefits to drinking seltzer water, such as easing constipation or supporting digestion. However, to counter, drinking seltzer water might encourage GERD, bloating, and even tooth decay.

Sparkling Water

When I think of sparkling water, one of the first things that come to mind is a brand of mineral water like Perrier. However, some sparkling waters are not mineral waters with natural occurring compounds that create effervescence and bubbles.

Unfortunately, some sparkling waters do have additional sugar, artificial sweeteners, and may be devoid of beneficial natural minerals for taste.

Usually, seltzer water is regular water that is injected with carbonation. Sparkling water typically has naturally occurring carbonation because of the minerals within.

Flat or Still Water

Look no further than your kitchen tap and you'll encounter flat or still water. Flat water or water that is still lacks carbonation and naturally occurring minerals that cause tiny gaseous bubbles to form.

Some people cannot stand the thought of having to drink such boring water and love the mouthfeel of carbonation found in seltzer or sparkling water.

However, other drinkers much prefer to consume flat or still water instead. The choice is yours.

(Once I had a can of Liquid Death that had so much carbonation I couldn’t take it. The mouthfeel was just too much for me to bear. However, my spouse loved it! No disrespect to Liquid Death, as I found a can with less carbonation and a mango-infused flavor that made my mouth approve.)

Food For Thought

Is It Worth Investing In A Carbonation Device For My Water?

Love sparkling or carbonated water but aren’t excited about purchasing products from the store? Why not consider getting a device to add CO2 to otherwise boring, flat water?

With the right gadget you can create your own sparkling water, sodas, and reduce how much you rely on plastic bottles of bubbly water.

What About Added Electrolytes, Ionization Of Water, And Alkalinized Water?

Some people support the idea of regularly consuming ionized or alkaline water. The popularity of Kangen water, added electrolytes, and water with a higher pH are pretty tempting.

Although there is still much debate surrounding whether ionized water has proven specific health benefits.

How Will Carrying Water In A Re-Usable Bottle Affect My Water’s Taste Or Quality?

There’s been some chatter about the possible adverse side effects of using a re-usable water bottle.

Unfortunately, depending on the type of material used to create your water bottle, its design, and how often you clean it, it might lead to an increase of unwanted bacteria build-up.

If you have a funky smelling water bottle or tiny remnants of debris or build-up it could make your water taste less than desirable.

Do your part to reduce using water bottles that readily end up in landfills over recycling. However, consider what type of water bottle is best for commuting, working on, or simply being on the go.

Are There Any Undesirable Side Effects From Drinking Seltzer Or Carbonated Water?

The side effect that most people get from drinking water with effervescence is going to be gas, belching, and for some, bloating

When carbon dioxide is added to water, you end up swallowing tiny gas bubbles too. Also, when you drink beverages, including water with a straw, ingesting more air can lead to unwanted gas, burps, and bloating.

What Are Some Fruits I Can Use To Infuse My Water For Better Flavor?

Think your flat water is boring and needs something more? Why not try adding a squeeze of lemon or lime for a burst of citrus flavor.

Or try adding a sprig of mint or some slices of cucumber for a reinvigorating zing. If adding some fruit or an herb to flavor your water will help you drink more of the good stuff, why not?

Before You Go

The next time you reach for something to drink, re-think the type of water you regularly consume and make sure you have enough throughout your day. Water is an essential part of the human body that helps regulate various systems.

Plus, staying hydrated helps improve the look of your skin, hair, and nails, and protects critical organs and joints.
